Bisk CPA Review – 3 Pros and Cons
Bisk CPA Review is one of the major CPA Exam Review courses out there. Is it good, and more importantly, can Bisk CPA help you pass the CPA exam? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.
Pros
1. Long Establishment. Bisk CPA Review has been around since 1971 and has helped more than 140,000 candidates in their CPA exam preparation. In fact, both Ernst and Young and KPMG have recently picked Bisk as their preferred self-study courses for their employees.
2. Legendary Lecturer. For many CPA candidates, one of the most (if not the only) reasons to choose pick is Robert “Bob” Monette, a specialist in continuing professional education and a nationally recognized expert on the CPA exam.
Bob Monette has many years of experience in teaching CPA exam review courses in Boston, New York and New Jersey. He is most famous for his ability to transform complicated accounting concepts into simple, easily digestible terms, which is why many CPA candidates are choosing Bisk over its competitors.
3. Interesting Features In Multimedia Software. Bisk CPA Review is the pioneer in offering the CPA review courses beyond the traditional text book version, notably in audio and video formats.
The latest multimedia software (the CD) allows students to practise and analyse their performance in a more efficient manner. For example, the “Create A Custom Exam” feature helps you pick the chapters and questions that you want to focus on, and the diagnostic feature in the CD helps track your progress and statistically shows your strength and weakness in each chapter.
Cons
1. Mixed Reviews. The best proof of whether a CPA review course is as good as it claims is recommendations from past students and the exam passing rate. It may be a surprise to you that Bisk CPA actually get very mixed reviews. Most of the negative opinions refer to the “classic” series, in which many past students complain that the program under-prepares them and that they have to purchase another CPA review course as a supplement.
Another criticism on the Bisk CPA review is that the Bisk text book is exactly the same as the CD – to the extent that you can match it word by word. I think it is a fair conclusion that you should either buy the book or the CD, but not both.
You may also want to take note that Bisk CPA never publishes an exam passing rate of their students, while competitors such as Yaeger (88% pass rate), Roger CPA (86%) and CPAExcel (85%) have no problem letting the world know about their achievements. Becker is a bit vague but at least they tell us that Becker students’ pass rate doubles that of non-Becker students, which of course include those who didn’t take any CPA review course at all.
2. Other Lecturers Are Not As Good. While Bob Monette gets raving reviews, the other lecturers tend to go through the program too fast without clearly explaining the concepts. Having said that, comments on the style of lecturers could be subjective so it is best if you can take a look at the demo at the Bisk CPA review website.
3. Competitors Are Offering Better Prices. Although the Bisk CPA Review course is considerably cheaper (24% less) than Becker, competitors are offering high-quality CPA review course at much better prices. For example, Yaeger CPA review course, at $1,550, is is 30% more affordable than Bisk (and 46% cheaper than Becker!) and that’s not including many discounts that you may qualify.
My Recommendations
If you are a die-hard fan of Bob Monette, you have no other choice but to get a copy of the Bisk CPA review.
