Ok the May portion of the Philippines CPA Board Exams is now over and what a board exam it was. 40.5% of examinees passed. If you took the board exams in the 90′s for sure you’ll marvel in disbelief. I think during that time, passing rates rarely breach 20%. But you know, the times, they are a-changing as Bob Dylan said. That’s more than 2k new CPAs added to the thousands already in existence. I wouldn’t worry so much about that though. I think CPAs have lesser difficulties in getting employed compared with other professions. Audit firms, for example, can always use fresh blood in their ranks.
Kudos to the St. Paul School of Business for bagging the first place. Awesome! I think Marwin Baldevia who did the honors sucker punched the top boys and girls from Manila. Hmmm. Let’s see how the premiere universities respond this October.
USJ-R of Cebu placed second courtesy of Antonio Sanchez Jr., no relation to the Calauan Mayor I hope, and slowly but surely these guys are firming their grip of being the best accounting school in Cebu City. My alma mater, the awesome USC, did a little better this time garnering the 4th (Chua | Lequin) and 6th places (Pino). Quantity however does not trump quality so I’m considering this a win for USJ-R.
Perennial May CPA Board favorites DLSU also made their presence felt with four examinees in the top 10– 7th, 8th, 9th(2).
UPD is historically not a May kind of school so they’ll hope to lord it all come October. But not if other schools can help it. In October of last year, 7 examinees coming from UPD made it to the top 10. 3 came from PUP-Sta. Mesa, 3 from UST. It’s fair to say that last year’s October CPA Board Exams was dominated by Luzon schools.

Here’s a fun fact, if the 10th placer in last Octobers CPA Board took the exams this May and got the same rating, he would have placed 1st! Hehehe. I know, I know, different exams, different questions, yada yada.. I’m just saying.
With the May 2011 CPA Board Exams out of the way, I’m really looking forward to the October 2011 CPA Board Exams when all the big boys and girls from the big universities and colleges come out to play. And with that said, the name of this website will now officially change to– drumrolls please– you guessed it:
